“We have to create a new standard”


Eighty percent of a garment’s carbon footprint is made during the textile design process – according to innovative textile platform BYBORRE. Samuel de Goede is a designer in the company that creates innovative yarn designs and textiles to help brands and makers discover new possibilities.

Samuel: “The process of developing a garment consists of several elements; it starts with yarn, from which fabric is made and that finally results in a garment. These different processes take place in isolation from each other and it is difficult for brands to connect them. With BYBORRE we have the ambition to open up this closed process and make all the different steps transparent and insightful. We want to give brands the opportunity to be more conscious and sustainable when developing a garment in the easiest way possible.”

On top of that, these various steps are not only isolated, but are also practiced in an unsustainable way, Samuel argues. “A raw material for a yarn often comes from one continent but the material is made in another place. Then the yarn goes to another country to be made into fabric and there is a good chance it will then go to a new place again to be made into a garment. We believe this can be done in a more logical and considered way. Investigating the best place to make certain materials ensures quality and minimizes environmental impact.”

The company developed a tool that allows brands to have the knowledge of these components presented in one overview and to research for themselves what suits them best – true design intelligence. Samuel: “We have a service called Create™ that allows brands to create their own fabric design, which we then create for them as a sample. To give customers an idea of what they can make with our materials, we have our own label as well.” Although the argument is often made that new collections are needed every season, Samuel states the importance of changing that cycle. “We have trained consumers to always want more and only new things, especially when it comes to clothing. I think this can change by collectively creating a new standard. That’s why we have reduced our own collection from two to one collection per year, which is completely seasonless. We want to exemplify the concept of ‘less but better’.”
